Pension Reform Key to Safeway Strike
Burt Flickinger spoke with NPR-WAMU's Jenny Gathright about the impending Safeway/Giant strike vote over wages, health care benefits and worker pensions, affecting 25K workers across 280 DC-area grocery stores. The key is Federal pension plan reform, given so many underfunded Taft-Hartley, multi-employer, retail grocery pension plans. Without Republicans & Democrats working together on long overdue federal pension plan reform, more non-union competition will grow -- as underfunded unionized pension plans are not the fault of the unions, workers, or employers.
